Who is the clinic suitable for?

Our First Seizure Clinic is suitable for adults and children who have experienced symptoms such as:

Driving After a Seizure

If you've had a seizure, DVLA rules mean you must stop driving straight away and tell the DVLA. After a single seizure, you'll usually need to be free of further seizures for six months before driving again, or twelve months if your assessment points to a higher chance of another seizure. 

What Is an EEG?

An electroencephalogram (EEG) is a safe, painless and non-invasive investigation that records the brain's natural electrical activity using small sensors placed on the scalp.

The test does not produce an electric shock and is suitable for both adults and children. Depending on the clinical circumstances, recordings may be performed while the patient is awake, sleepy or asleep.

Although an EEG alone cannot diagnose epilepsy, it provides valuable information that supports your consultant in making an accurate diagnosis and planning the most appropriate treatment.

Do I Need an Appointment?

Our First Seizure Clinic is suitable for children and adults who have experienced a possible first seizure or other unexplained neurological episode.

The clinic also provides assessment for people who require further evaluation to help clarify their diagnosis or, where appropriate, support decisions regarding driving eligibility.

If your main concern is a different neurological symptom, such as persistent headaches, memory changes or other neurological issues not related to seizures, our Neurological Consultations service may be a more appropriate starting point.

Assessment for Children

Seeing your child experience a seizure or unexplained collapse can be particularly distressing. Our paediatric first seizure service has been designed to provide families with prompt access to specialist assessment in a child-friendly environment.

Our experienced paediatric clinicians work closely with our neurophysiology team to investigate possible seizures, epilepsy and other neurological conditions. Every child receives an individual assessment, ensuring investigations are only recommended when clinically appropriate.

Following a detailed discussion about your child's symptoms, medical history and development, your consultant will carry out a clinical examination and determine whether an EEG or any further investigations are required.

If an EEG is recommended, it is performed by experienced clinical neurophysiology professionals using equipment suitable for children of all ages. The test is completely painless and non-invasive, helping your consultant build a clearer understanding of your child's condition.

Following assessment, we will explain the findings in clear, reassuring language and discuss any treatment, follow-up or onward referral that may be required. Where appropriate, we will also communicate with your GP and arrange referral to NHS or specialist paediatric neurology services.

What to Expect From Your EEG and Consultation

You can book your EEG online, while your consultation with one of our Consultant Neurologists needs to be arranged separately by contacting our team. The consultation takes place after your EEG has been completed.

EEG

You or your child will undergo an EEG performed by one of our experienced clinical neurophysiology professionals. The test is safe, painless and non-invasive, and suitable for patients of all ages.

Specialist Assessment

Following the EEG, you'll meet with your consultant, who will review the results alongside your or your child's medical history, symptoms and clinical examination. A detailed history is often the most important part of reaching an accurate diagnosis.

If possible, we encourage adults to attend with someone who has witnessed their episodes. For children, we recommend that a parent, guardian or another person who has observed the episodes attends the appointment. If this isn't possible, an eyewitness account or a video recording of an episode (where it is safe and appropriate to do so) can provide valuable additional information.

Your Care Plan

Your consultant will explain what the EEG findings may mean and discuss whether any further investigations, such as an MRI brain scan, would be beneficial. Where appropriate, they will also provide advice on treatment options, medication, ongoing management and practical considerations. For adults, this may include guidance on driving regulations where relevant.

Coordinated Care

With your consent, we'll send a summary of the assessment and recommendations to your NHS GP to help ensure your or your child's care remains coordinated and continuous. Where appropriate, referrals to specialist neurological or paediatric services can also be arranged.

Our Seizure Clinic runs from our Francis Road clinic in Edgbaston, Birmingham.

We are close to Five Ways train station, accessible by bus, tram, or train. If you're driving, patients can use the Broadway Plaza car park free of charge for up to 2 hours when their vehicle registration is validated at Midland Health reception.
