What is PSA Testing?

The Prostate-Specific Antigen (PSA) test is a straightforward blood test that looks for signs of prostate changes. It checks the level of a natural protein (PSA) made by your prostate. Higher-than-normal PSA levels can be a sign that something’s not quite right, but it doesn’t always mean cancer.

There are many reasons PSA can rise, including:

  • Ageing: PSA naturally increases as you get older
  • An Enlarged Prostate: A common, non-cancerous condition
  • Inflammation or Infection (Prostatitis)
  • Recent Sexual Activity, Exercise, or even Cycling
  • And, Sometimes, Prostate Cancer

Remember: A raised PSA result does not mean you have cancer. Most men with a high PSA do not have prostate cancer. That’s why expert interpretation is key. We don’t just give you a number; we’ll explain exactly what it means for you, in plain English.

Do I Need a PSA Test?

Many men choose a PSA test to take control of their health before symptoms start, particularly if they’re in a higher-risk group.

You may want to consider a test if:

  • You are aged 50 or over
  • You are 45+ with increased risk, such as:
    • A family history of prostate cancer (especially father or brother)
    • Being of Black African or Caribbean background, where the risk is higher
  • You’re experiencing the following symptoms:
    • Needing to urinate more often, especially at night
    • Difficulty starting or stopping urination
    • A weak flow or dribbling
    • Pain or discomfort when urinating
    • Blood in urine or semen (less common)

If you’re unsure whether you should be tested, we’re here to talk it through with you, there’s no pressure.

What to Expect During Your PSA Testing

We aim to make the process as smooth and stress-free as possible.

Before Your Test

To get the most accurate result, we’ll ask you to:

  • Avoid sexual activity, including ejaculation, for 48 hours
  • Avoid vigorous exercise, such as cycling, for 48 hours

It’s also important to let us know if you’ve had:

  • A recent urine or prostate infection
  • A prostate procedure
  • Any recent medical tests affecting the area

If you’re unsure about any of this, don’t worry, we’ll go through it all with you.

On the Day

You’ll be welcomed into our Edgbaston clinic and seen in a private, comfortable consultation room. Here, we’ll take a small blood sample, usually from your arm. After this, you’re free to leave.

Normally, the whole visit takes less than 30 minutes.

After the Test

Once we have your blood sample, we’ll get this sent off to our trusted laboratory.  We will typically receive your results within 1-2 working days. When we have them, you will receive a follow-up call or consultation to discuss your results with a consultant. We won’t simply tell you a number; instead, we’ll explain what your reading means for you personally.

What If My PSA Level is High?

If your PSA is raised, it doesn’t mean you have prostate cancer, and it certainly doesn’t mean you need treatment right away.

Instead, it may mean:

  • We repeat the test in a few weeks to see if it settles
  • We do a physical prostate examination (optional and done gently, with full consent)
  • We arrange a specialist scan (MRI) to look more closely
  • In some cases, a biopsy may be recommended, but only if clearly needed

We never rush to invasive procedures. Everything is explained clearly, and the choice is always yours.

We’ll Help You Understand Your PSA Result

Your PSA result will be considered alongside your age, symptoms, and medical history.

Here’s an overview:

PSA Level (ng/ml)What It Could Mean
Low (< 1.5)Normal range – no immediate action needed
Slightly raisedCould be age-related or from benign causes
Moderately raisedMay need further monitoring or scanning
HighFurther investigations likely recommended

Your consultant will explain your result in context, and recommend what (if anything) to do next.

Keep Track with a PSA Monitoring Card

For men who choose regular testing (e.g. every 1–2 years), we offer a free PSA record card, a handy way to track changes and trends over time. This can be printed or digital; all you need to do is ask.
